  Oleksandr Mel′nychuk as an Etymologist and ComparatistOleksandr Mel′nychuk (1921–1997) made a great contribution to the theory and methodology of historical-comparative studies of genetically related languages. His work mainly concerned three areas: the word family approach to the study of Slavic, Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages, the theory of monoglottogenesis, and the historical typology of Slavic languages. After a brief overview of his life and work, this study focuses on the first area, outlining the principal features of the word family approach he developed, both theoretically and with regard to research on the origin of particular Slavic lexical items. Ołeksandr Melnyczuk jako etymolog i komparatystaOłeksandr Melnyczuk (1921–1997) wniósł znaczący wkład w rozwój teorii i metodologii badań historyczno-porównawczych pokrewnych języków. W swej pracy skupiał się głównie na trzech obszarach: podejściu gniazdowym do badania leksyki słowiańskiej, indoeuropejskiej i pozaindoeuropejskiej, teorii monoglottogenezy oraz typologii historycznej języków słowiańskich. Wychodząc od krótkiego zarysu biografii badacza i jego dorobku naukowego, niniejszy artykuł skupia się na pierwszym z wymienionych kierunków jego zainteresowań: przedstawia główne elementy podejścia gniazdowego w ujęciu Melnyczuka zarówno w aspekcie teoretycznym, jak i w odniesieniu do badań nad etymologią poszczególnych słowiańskich jednostek leksykalnych.
