Czasopismo wydawane było przez obserwatorium astronomiczne w Berlinie-Treptow, utworzone w 1896 r. z okazji 25 rocznicy podniesienia Berlina do rangi stolicy Rzeszy. Placówka miała za zadanie popularyzować wiedzę o astronomii wśród Niemców, czemu służył m. in. wydawany od początku XX w. do lat czterdziestych periodyk „Weltall” („Kosmos”). Podtytuł czasopisma ewoluował (w pierwszych latach ukazywania się tyt.: Das Weltall : Bildgeschmückte Zeitschrift für Astronomie und verwandte Gebiete), zmieniała się również częstotliwość oraz format jego wydawania. Czasopismo astronomiczne (oraz dziedzin pokrewnych) zawiera czarno-białe fotografie oraz ilustracje.
