  The text deals with the current state of research on the settlement area on Rowokół (German Revekol Berg), with an added emphasis on its function and role in the early Middle Ages. The area excavated consists of the proposed fort located on the top of the mound (Smołdzino, site 4), functioning in the literature as a pre-Christian place of worship, and a stronghold located on the eastern slopes (Smołdzino, site 3). Both sites have been excavated, but the materials from the hillfort have not been studied in a satisfactory manner so far. Rowokół has also been an area of interest to historians whose primary focus has been on the former church and cemetery there in the late Middle Ages. The text points to shortcomings in the identification of the archaeological sites and the analyses of the historicalmaterials included in studies revealed earlier by many researchers.Another aim of the article is to encourage theoretical reflection allowing a cultural-scientific interpretation of this unique space, which could serve as a model for further comparative research.
