  In 1820, Anglican clergyman James Haldane Stewart (1776-1854) published a small work entitled Hints for a General Union of Christians for Prayer for the out-pouring of the Holy Spirit. The text is a small treatise on prayer, but also an appeal and a detailed instruction concerning internal beliefs and external actions, trying to cover personal and social Christian life: prayer and meetings, sermons and gatherings, reading the Bible and correspondence. It is based on the legacy of the awakening movements and initiatives of the previous century: e.g. the Methodist revival, the American First Great Awakening or the A humble attempt of Jonathan Edwards. Stewarts’Hints are witness of his times: of the social crisis, of the messianic-eschatological awakening and of the missionary enthusiasm. They are also a harbinger of the pneumatological currents of the future times, especially of the Pentecostal movement. Stewart’s work remains an important stage in the history of spiritual ecumenism, based on conversion and prayer which will be fully developed in XX century.;
  W roku 1820 anglikański duchowny James Haldane Stewart (1776-1854) opublikował małe dzieło pt. Wskazówki dla ogólnego zjednoczenia chrześcijan w modlitwie o wylanie Ducha Świętego. Tekst jest małym traktatem o modlitwie, ale także odezwą i szczegółową instrukcją dotyczącą wewnętrznych przekonań i zewnętrznych działań, starającą się objąć osobiste i społeczne życie chrześcijańskie: modlitwę i spotkania, kazania i zebrania, lekturę Biblii i korespondencję. Opiera się na dziedzictwie przebudzeniowych ruchów i inicjatyw poprzedniego wieku: np. przebudzenia metodystycznego, amerykańskiego Pierwszego Wielkiego Przebudzenia czy Pokornej próby Jonathana Edwardsa. Wskazówki Stewarta są świadkiem jego czasów: kryzysu społecznego, przebudzenia mesjanistyczno-eschatologicznego i zapału misyjnego. Są także zwiastunem pneumatologicznych prądów czasów przyszłych, zwłaszcza ruchu zielonoświątkowego. Dzieło Stewarta pozostaje ważnym etapem w historii ekumenizmu duchowego, opartego na nawróceniu i modlitwie, który w pełni rozwinie się w XX wieku.
