W notatce Althussera znajdujemy opis przyczynowości strukturalnej, przeciwstawiony teleologicznym i mechanistycznym wizjom historycznej determinacji. Jest to tekst o znaczeniu dokumentalnym, pozwalający spojrzeć na problemy przedstawione choćby w Czytaniu Kapitałuz perspektywy zaproponowanej przez Althussera w pracach poświęconych m.in. aleatorycznym ujęciom materializmu i teorii historii.
