  The article focuses on the problems that nineteenth-century librarians and publishers had to struggle with. Basing on the example of publishing activities, it discusses key issues referring to the book trade on the publishing market and concentrates on the main problems of librarians and publishers such as censorship, repression by occupying powers, the adjustment of publishing to prevailing conditions, low readership and problems with gaining customers who would guarantee the company’s profitability, the definition of the publishing profile of the company, problems with finding authors willing to cooperate with the publisher, the number of copies printed, the aesthetics of publication’s layout.;
  Tematem artykułu są dylematy, z jakimi borykali się dziewiętnastowieczni księgarze i wydawcy. Na przykładzie działalności wydawnictwa Michała Arcta omówione zostały najważniejsze zagadnienia, dotyczące obrotu książką na rynku wydawniczym oraz główne problemy księgarzy i wydawców, np.: cenzura i represje ze strony zaborców oraz dostosowanie prowadzonej działalności wydawniczej do panujących warunków, niski procent czytelnictwa i związane z tym problemy w pozyskiwaniu klientów, którzy byli gwarantem dochodowości firmy, określenie profilu wydawniczego firmy, znalezienie autorów chętnych do współpracy z wydawcą i utrzymywanie z nimi dobrych relacji, ustalenie właściwego nakładu planowanego druku, estetyka szaty graficznej wydawanych publikacji.
