Paulina Bunio-Mroczek, PhD in sociology, assistant professor at the Department of Applied Sociology and Social Work at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Łódź. Her academic interests concentrate around the issues of poverty, social exclusion, social work and gender. She teaches at social work, sociology and social policy bachelor’s and master’s programs. She is also interested in social changes of postindustrial cities resulting from revitalization programs.;
Małgorzata Potoczna, PhD in sociology, assistant professor at the De¬partment of Applied Sociology and Social Work at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Łódź. The main area of her research interests is the issue of poverty and social exclusion, with a particular emphasis on the sociology of the life course and biographical experiences of people at risk of social marginalisation and social exclusion. Małgorzata Potoczna also focuses on social work teaching and social welfare changes in the context of active integration measures provided to the socially excluded. Her field of research is also evaluation of projects in social work and social workers education.;
Wielisława Warzywoda-Kruszyńska, full professor of sociology at the University of Łódź. Director of the Institute of Sociology for 16 years, she also chaired the Department of General Sociology, and the Department of Applied Sociology and Social Work. She contributed to the establishment of a major in Social Work at the Institute of Sociology. From the very start of her scientific career, Prof. Warzywoda-Kruszyńska’s research interests have been focused on the transformation of social structure in Poland as it is broadly understood, including the topics of poverty and social exclusion which she has persistently pursued since the early 1990s. One of the outcomes of several research projects conducted in this area is her thesis of juvenalization of poverty in Poland. Moreover, Prof. Warzywoda-Kruszyńska has participated in numerous international research projects, including the PROFIT project funded by the European Union as part of the 6th Framework Programme where she served as a coordi¬nator. She is the author or co-author of 34 monographs and more than 120 scientific articles. Prof. Warzywoda-Kruszyńska is a winner of the programme ‘Master of the Foundation for Polish Science’. She is a mem¬ber of numerous Polish and international scientific associations.
Description:
The book is about poverty in Poland during the period of system transformation and in the decade that followed, as documented in the life courses of consecutive generations of women living in the disadvantaged neighbourhoods in the post-industrial city. 69 life histories were collected. The authors analyse the life histories of four generations of women where the oldest are former workers in state-owned factories in which they worked until retirement and who used to be the avant-garde of the women’s working class during the socialist period. Their daughters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters occurred redundant on the capitalist labour market and lived on social benefits. The book is unique in both Polish and world literature since it goes beyond traditionally considered “feminisation of poverty” in monetary terms. It searches for poverty drivers and maintainers embedded in changes in industrial relations, welfare regime and family structures and relations. It also tells about women’ efforts and capabilities to cope with the disadvantage. The publication will be of interest to a broad audience composed of scholars concerned with poverty, social marginalisation and exclusion, officers in public and non-governmental institutions as well as to students of social work, sociology, pedagogy, psychology, social policy, gender studies and family science.;
