  USING PARALLEL TEXTS TO DETERMINE CONNOTATIVE AND DENOTATIVE EQUIVALENTS IN POLISH-ENGLISH TRANSLATION

  The article touches upon the usage of parallel texts for determining connotative and denotative equivalents for the purpose of Polish-English translation. The terms and syntagms from the law of contracts (contracts of lease and tenancy) serve the purpose of showing the method offinding equivalents. British statutes on lease and tenancy are used to determine connotative equivalents. At the same time Louisiana Civil Code as well as the translation of the Polish Civil Code into English by TEPIS are used to find denotative equivalents for Polish legal institutions. Finally, the author points out that at the level of textual-normative equivalence (especially in the case of word collocations or combinations) parallel texts are an indispensable source of translative information which cannot be replaced by any dictionary.;
  Praca dotyczy wykorzystania tekstów paralelnych do ustalania ekwiwalentów konotacyjnych i denotacyjnych na potrzeby przekładu polsko-angielskiego. Autorka na przykładzie terminów i syntagm z prawa zobowiązań umownych (najem i dzierżawa) pokazuje, w jaki sposób osiągać ekwiwalencję konotacyjną i denotacyjną. Jako źródła ekwiwalencji konotacyjnej posłużyły brytyjskie ustawy dotyczące najmu i dzierżawy. Natomiast jako źródła ekwiwalentów denotacyjnych w przekładzie polsko-angielskim autorka proponuje tekst ustawy amerykańskiej Louisiana Civil Code oraz przekład polskiego Kodeksu cywilnego na język angielski wydany przez wydawnictwo TEPIS. Ponadto, autorka wskazuje, że na poziomie ekwiwalencji tekstowonormatywnej– szczególnie syntagm (połączeń wyrazowych nazywanych w języku angielskim także word combinations lub word collocations, a w języku polskim m.in. związkami frazeologicznymi lub frazeologizmami) – teksty paralelne stanowią nieodzowne źródło informacji,którego nie może zastąpić żaden słownik.
