  Nach der Ausrufung des Kriegsrechts in Polen fertigte der Sicherheitsapparat der DDR Meldungen nicht nur über die Stimmungen innerhalb der ostdeutschen Bevölkerung über Polen und seine Einwohner an, sondern auch über die Ereignisse im Westen. In einem dieser Berichte können wir lesen: „Der Westen macht ein »Theater«. Die Berichterstattung in den westlichen Medien ist nur sentimental". Seit den 80er Jahren nämlich ging das Freundschaftstheater zwischen Polen und der DDR seinem Ende entgegen, und in den Medien der DDR war kein Platz mehr für ein freundliches Wort über den östlichen Nachbarn. Anders war die Lage in den 70er Jahren, der Zeit der „offenen Grenze". Seinerzeit näherten sich Polen und die DDR auf der Ebene offizieller Kontakte an, und man nahm eine grenzüberschrei- tende Zusammenarbeit in den Bereichen von Politik, Kultur und Wirtschaft auf. Wurden aber auch persönliche Kontakte zwischen den Einwohnern Polens und der DDR geknüpft, die im Laufe der Zeit bei der Überwindung von Vorurteilen und Stereotypen gegenüber dem Nachbarn jenseits von Oder und Neiße beitragen konnten? Handelte es sich nur um eine oberflächliche Freundschaft, eine Art von Theater, das im Grunde nicht mehr als politische Gesten bedeutete? In diesem Aufsatz wird auf der Grundlage einer Analyse zweier Arten von Begegnungen in den Jahren der offenen Grenze: Besuchen von Einwohnern der DDR in Polen in ihrem früheren Besitz sowie von Einkäufen beiderseits von Oder und Neiße der Versuch einer Antwort auf diese Fragen unternommen.;
  After martial law was declared in Poland, the GDR security apparatus prepared reports not only on the mood of the East German population about Poland and its inhabitants, but also on events in the West. In one of these reports we can read: "The West is putting on a 'theatre'. The reporting in the Western media is only sentimental." Since the 1980s, the theatre of friendship between Poland and the GDR was coming to an end, and there was no room in the GDR media for a friendly word about the eastern neighbour. The situation was different in the 1970s, the time of the "open border". At that time, Poland and the GDR were getting closer at the level of official contacts, and cross-border cooperation in the fields of politics, culture and the economy was established. But were personal contacts also established between the inhabitants of Poland and the GDR, which over time helped to overcome prejudices and stereotypes about the neighbour across the Oder and Neisse? Was it just a superficial friendship, a kind of theatre that basically meant nothing more than political gestures? This essay attempts to answer these questions on the basis of an analysis of two types of encounters during the years of the open border: visits by residents of the GDR to Poland in their former possessions and purchases on both sides of the Oder and Neisse.
