Im 19. Jahrhundert war Steinkohle der wichtigste Energieträger in den Indu- strieländern und sie ersetzte größtenteils Holz, Holzkohle und Wasserfallkraft. Im 20. Jahrhundert wurde Steinkohle durch neue Energiequellen bedeutend, obwohl nicht ganz, verdrängt - besonders durch Erdöl und Erdgas. Schon im 19. Jahrhundert wurde Erdöl zu kommerziellen Zwecken vor allem zur Erzeugung des Lampenpetroleums, ferner der plastischen Schmierstoffe verwendet. Erst die Erfindung des Verbrennungsmotors steigerte die Möglichkeiten der Erdölnutzung in der Volkswirtschaft deutlich. In Bezug auf Stromproduktion wurden die aus Erdöl hergestellten flüssigen Treibstoffe konkurrenzfähiger als die aus Steinkohle und Wasserfallkraft, und in Bezug auf Heizenergieproduktion als die auf Basis von Steinkohle. Die Deckung des Ölbedarfs spielte eine immer größere Rolle in jedem Staat. Jetzt wird Erdöl für „das Blut der modernen Wirtschaft" gehalten und ist der wichtigste strategische Rohstoff.
