  The Extension and Modernization of the Cracow Tram Transport in the Years 1989-2009 in View of the New Requirements of the Town Development

  The purpose of the paper is to answer the question if and how the municipal tram transport in Cracow has been able to adapt to the new socio-economic conditions after 1989. The most important characteristics ofthe town’s spatial development over the last 20 years have been decrease of the industry, especially of the most important plant of the town - the Steel works, the rapid development of services in form of shopping malls, business centers and restaurants and cafes in the town centre. Between 1989 and 2009 the last 20 years three tram sections in the total length of 5,6 km have been build and over 75% of the network has been modernized. The rolling stock has been modernized as well. However, the process of the town’s spatial development is still much faster than the extension of the tram network. Plenty of housing estates, both build during the communist period and after 1989, as well as the new Jagiellonian University campus in the district of Ruczaj still have got no access to the municipal tram transport. Because of that some new housing developments adapt to the existing tram network, for instance in the Grzegórzki, Zakrzówek, Kurdwanów and Krowodrza Górka districts.;
  Celem pracy jest odpowiedź na pytanie, czy i w jaki sposób miejski transport tramwajowy w Krakowie był w stanie dostosować się do nowych warunków społeczno-gospodarczych po 1989 r. Do najważniejszych cech zagospodarowania przestrzennego miasta w ciągu ostatnich 20 lat zalicza się zmniejszenie znaczenia przemysłu, zwłaszcza w najważniejszych obszarach miasta - szybki rozwój usług w formie centrów handlowych, centrów biznesowych i restauracji czy kawiarni w centrum miasta. W latach 1989 i 2009 trzy sekcje tramwajowe o łącznej długości 5,6 km zostały wybudowane i ponad 75% sieci zostało zmodernizowanych. Jednakże rozwój przestrzenny miasta jest nadal o wiele szybszy niż rozbudowa sieci tramwajowej. Wiele osiedli mieszkaniowych, budowanych w okresie komunizmu i po 1989 r„ jak również nowy kampus Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w dzielnicy Ruczaj nadal nie ma dostępu do miejskiej komunikacji tramwajowej. Z tego też względu niektóre nowo powstające osiedla mieszkaniowe dostosowują się do istniejącej sieci tramwajowej, np. w Grzegórzki, Zakrzówek, Kurdwanów i dzielnica Krowodrza Górka.
