  Studies on the history of libraries as a research field within a domain of the French historiographic tradition first appeared towards the end of the 1980s. Its theoretical underpinnings were in fact provided by the existing studies on the history of books and the founding works by Henri-Jean Martin (1924–2007). Despite a sizeable number of publications following the publication of the Histoire des bibliothèques françaises (Paris, 1988–1992, 4 vols.), this particular research area somehow failed to take advantage of the dynamics generally attributed to works on the history of books. Largely focusing on institutional and present-day issues, a substantial portion of the study on the history of libraries continued for a long time to be isolated and dominated by library-based authors only. A change in this situation came as late as the first decade of the 21st century and was greatly influenced by the works of the recently deceased historian Frédéric Barbier (1952–2023). Since that time, we have been witnessing a significant widening of perspectives, very much in line with the wish expressed by F. Barbier himself in his Histoire des bibliothèques en Occident (ed. I, Paris, 2013). This area of research (history of libraries) attracts interests of more and more researchers and has become a transnational domain at the pan-European level. The present research study documents these cultural and timeless transitions (challenging the perceived divisions between the Middle Ages and the Ancien Régime, and the Ancien Régime and modern times), and thus becoming multidisciplinary as well as interdisciplinary studies that integrate a number of disciplines (political history, social history, history of culture, architecture, etc.). At the same time, research on the history of libraries retains a strong relationship with studies on the history of books and media. The position and standing of libraries, that went through profound transformations due to both cuts in their budgets and the implications of the digital revolution in the first years of the 21st century, seems to be endangered, both as an institution and a place. However, their purpose in modern democracy is not outdated and they still perform a significant mission by making it possible for all to have equal access to cultural resources and media. Libraries provide non-vertical mediation (i.e. cataloguing and metadata creation, classification and storage …), that is still essential to make data and documents available. They continue to accommodate in one cultural space – that becomes more and more comfortable and friendly – both readers and visitors that learn to “live together” within this space, conforming at the same time to applicable rules and regulations. Despite their seemingly disadvantageous situation, one may though assume that modern libraries will continue to provide fresh and stimulating material for historical research for long years to come;
  Dans le contexte historiographique français, l’histoire des bibliothèques a émergé, à la fin des années 1980, comme la « fille » de l’histoire du livre et des travaux fondateurs d’Henri-Jean Martin (1924–2007). Après l’Histoire des bibliothèques françaises (Paris, 1988–1992, 4 vol.), en dépit d’un certain nombre de publications, ce domaine de recherche a toutefois peiné à profiter de la dynamique et des promesses de l’histoire du livre. Souvent centrée sur des problématiques institutionnelles et contemporaines, l’histoire des bibliothèques est restée longtemps cloisonnée et monopolisée par les professionnels des bibliothèques. Le déclic ne s’est en fait amorcé qu’à partir des années 2000 sous l’influence des travaux de l’historien Frédéric Barbier (1952–2023), récemment disparu. Depuis lors, on a assisté à un élargissement considérable des perspectives, suivant le vœu exprimé par F. Barbier luimême dans son Histoire des bibliothèques en Occident (1re édition, Paris, 2013). L’histoire des bibliothèques a impliqué un nombre croissant de chercheur(e)s ; elle est devenue transnationale au niveau européen, attentive aux transferts culturels, trans-séculaire (en surmontant les clivages Moyen Âge / Ancien Régime et Ancien Régime / époque contemporaine), pluridisciplinaire (objet d’histoire politique, sociale, culturelle, architecturale…), tout en conservant un lien fort avec l’histoire du livre et des médias. Profondément transformées en ce début de XXIe siècle, sous la double action des coupes budgétaires et de la révolution du numérique, les bibliothèques paraissent menacées en tant qu’institutions et en tant que lieux. Néanmoins elles assurent des missions essentielles à l’âge démocratique, en permettant l’accès égal de tous (individuellement connectés ou non) aux ressources culturelles et médiatiques, en assurant une médiation non «  verticale  » (catalogage et création de métadonnées, classements et rangements…), indispensable à la mise à disposition des données et des documents, et en accueillant en un même espace culturel, de plus en plus confortable et convivial, un public de lecteurs aussi bien que de visiteurs qui apprennent à y « vivre ensemble » en respectant certaines règles. Malgré une conjoncture en apparence défavorable, on peut donc considérer que les bibliothèques contemporaines vont continuer d’offrir longtemps à la recherche historique un matériau vivant et stimulant.;
  We francuskim kontekście historiograficznym historia bibliotek jako dziedzina pojawiła się pod koniec lat 80. XX wieku. To „córka” historii książki i dzieł założycielskich Henri-Jeana Martina (1924–2007). Mimo sporej liczby publikacji po ukazaniu się Histoire des bibliothèques françaises (Paryż 1988–1992, 4 tomy) ta dziedzina badań miała trudności z wykorzystaniem dynamiki charakterystycznej dla historii książki. Historia bibliotek, skupiając się często na problematyce instytucjonalnej i kwestiach współczesnych, przez długi czas pozostawała odizolowana i zmonopolizowana przez pracowników biblio-tek. Zmiana dokonała się dopiero w pierwszej dekadzie XXI wieku pod wpływem prac niedawno zmarłego historyka, Frédérica Barbiera (1952–2023). Od tamtego czasu jesteśmy świadkami znacznego poszerzenia się perspektyw, zgodnie z życzeniem wyrażonym przez samego Barbiera w Histoire des bibliothèques en Occident (wyd. 1, Paryż 2013). Historia bibliotek interesuje coraz większą liczbę badaczy, stała się dziedziną ponadnarodową na poziomie europejskim. Rejestruje przemiany kulturowe, ponadczasowe (przezwyciężając podziały średniowiecze – Ancien régime i Ancien regime – epoka współczesna), stając się nauką multidyscyplinarną (historia polityczna, społeczna, historia kultury, architektury…) i zachowując jednocześnie silny związek z historią książki i mediów. Biblioteki, które na początku XXI wieku uległy znacznej transformacji z powodu zarówno cięć budżetowych, jak i rewolucji cyfrowej, zdają się zagrożone jako instytucje i jako miejsca. Niemniej jednak nadal pełnią istotną misję we współczesnej demokracji, umożliwiając równy dostęp wszystkim (mającym indywidualny dostęp lub nie) do zasobów kultury i mediów, zapewniając mediację „niepionową” (katalogowanie i tworzenie metadanych, klasyfikacja i przechowywanie), niezbędną do udostępniania danych i dokumentów, oraz przyjmując w jednej przestrzeni kulturowej – coraz wygodniejszej i przyjaźniejszej – zarówno czytelników, jak i gości, którzy uczą się w niej „żyć razem”, przestrzegając obowiązujących zasad. Mimo pozornie niekorzystnej sytuacji można uznać, że współczesne biblioteki jeszcze przez długi czas będą dostarczać żywego i inspirującego materiału do badań historycznych.
